January 21 - Watson Mill Bridge 3/47

I had MLK day off and decided to head out to the nearby Watson Mill Bridge SP. Visitor's Center was closed, but I already had the patch for the park, so that was okay.

The park is neither big (though it does pass 1k acres, much of this is set up for horse trails) nor particularly beautiful. But it is a curious place due to its history as a mill and vacation spot. The covered bridge is amazing and I walked back and forth along it a good handful of times to enjoy the sound of creaking timbers and the scent of aging wood. There are a few ruined buildings, just a few stone walls at this point, here and there along the trail.

The bridge itself was built in 1885 by W. W. King, the son of a freed slave and renowned bridge builder named Horace King. I respect and admire folks' determination to succeed during hard times.
